Line & Copy Editing

Line-by-Line EditS & Corrections

Line Editing (aka heavy copyediting)

Line editing is when we examine your book on the sentence and paragraph level and address awkward or unclear writing, wordiness, redundancies, clichés, weak dialogue, and more. This is not a full copyedit, but most errors in grammar and spelling will be corrected. We’ll also point out any remaining big-picture issues. With a line edit, we aim to elevate your writing to an artful level.

If your book requires a substantial rewrite, we can take care of this for you (what we call ghost editing, or book doctoring). Just inquire!

we'll address:

  • awkward or unclear writing

  • sentence length and variety

  • paragraph flow and transitions

  • clichés and weak words

  • wordiness and redundancy

  • telling versus showing

  • dialogue tags

  • verb tense usage

  • changes in point of view

  • remaining big-picture issues

  • most errors in grammar, punctuation, and spelling

time frame:

  • 4–6 weeks

  • 3.3 to 3.8 cents per word

  • for example, a 50,000-word manuscript would cost $1,650 to $1,900

Copyediting is a line-by-line correction of your manuscript, with the goal of making your writing clear and professional. We'll correct errors in grammar, punctuation, and spelling; flag any inconsistencies we find; lightly address word choice and phrasing; and do light fact-checking. Our style guide of choice is The Chicago Manual of Style, but if you have a preferred style guide or an in-house style guide, we will edit your work in accordance with it. For most books, we'll create a style sheet. Our copyediting service is recommended for every book and is a must before self-publishing.

we'll address:

  • errors in grammar, punctuation, and spelling

  • consistency in style and facts

  • consistency in formatting

  • some redundancy

  • some word choice and phrasing

  • light fact-checking

  • table of contents against chapters

  • numbering of footnotes, end notes, tables, and figures

time frame:

  • 3–4 weeks

  • starts at 2.8 cents per word

  • for example, a 50,000-word manuscript would cost $1,400
